I FINALLY ORDERED SEASON ONE OF THE TRIBE ON DVD.

$25 from Amazon UK. Worth every cent, because this is the season of both Lex's Mesh Shirt of Nipple-Censored Doom and his Krazy Kolors Suspenders-and-Tight-Pants Combo!

1. I have a new blog devoted to books I hate and why I hate them. This is shameless pimping: Undermining Literacy.

2. I have a new cat. Her name is Lily, after, yes, Lily Potter. Since I'm determined to be a crazy cat lady and indulge in all the perks of such an existence (namely, inflicting endless cat pictures and videos upon my trusting friends), have some visual representation:

Saw Erin McCarley and Mat Kearney in concert in Des Moines last night! It was a good show; the venue was an outdoor park right on the riverbank and it was a beautiful night. The performer/audience interaction was awkwardly stilted, but the music was good. My friends and I actually met Mat Kearney outside his tour bus as he headed down to the stage to do a sound check; he autographed one of my CDs, but I didn't ask for pictures because I didn't want to keep him from the sound check. He was really nice, but of course, though I have spent the last three years thinking out what I would tell him if I actually met him, we talked about the weather. The weather. *headdesk* Sometimes I amaze even myself.

Pictures and video (with admittedly scratchy audio) behind the cut. )

The Cleavage is strong with empowered female Star Wars fans!

[info]ennta
Let me begin by saying that, yes, I did read the whole article about the Imperial Services Organization, a ladies-only Star Wars fan group. Yes, I love the fact that they do charity work with a zeal and panache that only geeks can manage. No, there's absolutely nothing wrong with supporting soldiers at home and overseas.

But do they have to do it while dressed as forties-style pinups? Really? Do they have to be so thrilled at being immortalized as glorified, glammed-up waitresses in official webcomics? Because wow, if the extent of my role in canon was to serve a drink to a clonetrooper while wearing a short skirt, I'd totally feel super duper empowered. What is this, Star Trek circa 1966?

I'm sorry, but as a female Star Wars fan, I'd rather my experiences with fandom not be of the dazzling-nerdboys-with-cleavage-and-pretensions-of-empowerment type. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to polish off my metal bikini and find a guy to chain myself to.

I'm just about through the first season of Star Trek: TOS ...

... and I'd like a list of Star Trek book recommendations. I'm particularly interested in Spock, Bones, Uhura, and, after reading Spock's World, Sarek and Amanda. (Sarek/Amanda is really the only 'ship that's jumped out at me so far, although the early Spock/Uhura flirtation is pretty cute.) I know the nearest Half-Price Books store usually has a large selection of tattered out-of-print ST books for $1 each, so I'd like to know what to look for the next time I get to the store. I'm so excited to have another expanded universe to maniacally throw myself into, get disillusioned with, and eventually disown!*

For those of you on my flist who are familiar with both expanded universes, how would you say they differ? Have they both jumped the shark? Are the flaws in one easier to dismiss than the flaws in the other? How do fandom attitudes towards canon vary from the Star Wars fan to the Star Trek fan?

*Yes, Star Wars, I'm still bitter, so you can take your endless parade of clonetroopers and DIAF.

Remember when Sue Rostoni announced that Zekk was getting his very own standalone paperback, and so we persevering fangirls laced up our ice skates and went skimming over the frozen surface of hell, throwing confetti and congratulating one another on our patience in waiting for Zekk to be acknowledged by the EU-at-large? Ah, optimism!

NOW IT IS LOOKING INCREASINGLY LIKELY THAT HELL WAS SIMPLY EXPERIENCING A MINOR FURNACE BREAKDOWN THAT HAS NOW BEEN FIXED BY THE ONLY STAR WARS AUTHOR I DISLIKE MORE THAN KAREN TRAVISS, ELAINE CUNNINGHAM.

Maybe Blood Oath has merely been postponed again? Perhaps I shouldn't panic? Maybe I'll wake tomorrow to the sight of unicorns crapping rainbows across a cloudless sky?

I've picked up a second job working at the local library. It's absolutely awesome, especially after a trying shift at Hy-Vee. Sure, we have our share of morons, but it's nothing compared to what I've dealt with in retail. But there is one sad similarity: My crazy stalker apparently heads to the library after he's done accosting hapless employees at Hy-Vee. In fact, this Saturday afternoon, he's having a book signing at the library. (He hasn't yet sold a single book.) I work this Saturday afternoon. At the library.

So I'm finally watching classic Star Trek after seeing the new movie. My previous Trek experience was limited to a few DS9 eps, the last two seasons of Star Trek: Voyager and a few unmemorable novels, all back when I was eleven or twelve. So here are my real-time reactions to episode two, Charlie X, as IMd to my faint-of-heart friend who refused to watch the eps with me but wanted to know what happened. :p I'm posting this mostly because I want to remember my first impressions, stupid and filled with random caps lock as they are, should I happen to be sucked into this fandom.

HERE BE LOTS OF STUPID )

Overall, I think I'll keep watching.

I never write anymore.

So, dear friends, if you would like to inspire me by posting a pairing or fandom or character name along with a prompt (song lyrics, a quote, a picture, etc.), I'll try to get drabbling along again.

Fandoms I could try my hand at writing for:

+Star Wars
+Twilight
+Harry Potter
+Psych
+Firefly
+Pushing Daisies
+Doctor Who

Scintillating, really.

Tonight, the majority of my coworkers were male and seventeen. Their conversation went as follows for at least an hour and a half:

"You're gay!"

"You're gayer!"

"You're gayest!"

"Oh, I'll beat you up for that!"

"I'll beat you up more!"

"Fifty bucks says I'll beat you up morest because you're gay!"

"You're gayer!"

... and so on and so forth unto infinity. You know, it occurs to me that the Doctor, with all his faith in the human race, has obviously never worked a shift at Hy-Vee. I try to believe there's more to the world than hicks in stained pajama bottoms wielding food stamp cards and praying to their lottery tickets, but it's difficult to maintain any sort of hope. Maybe I should just start beating people up.

I love it when my favorite characters are immortalized in plastic.

Why yes, that is a Ninth Doctor action figure. I bought him at Hastings yesterday. When he's not posing next to Yorrick, my decorative skull/candy bowl, he resides on my bookshelf, right next to my Snape figure. They're currently trying to out-snark and out-Brit one another, all the while arguing over which type of flower is better: a lily or a rose? It's rather tiring. Luke and Mara on the next shelf up--and my R2-D2 and Princess Jasmine pez dispensers on the shelf above that--are trying to shut them up, but it just isn't working.

Zekk deserves a picspam of sorts.

You know how Zekk is described as being, you know, attractive, but the book covers always make him look green and/or constipated? You know how he got a really bad spray tan before posing for the cover of Blood Oath? ("Look, Jaina, I'm not pale anymore! Now I'm orange!!") Well, over the years, the lack of any kind of consistently pretty and stuff Zekk art has led me to form many character conceptualizations in my head, none of which reflect on his unfortunate experiences with cover artists. Here, have some crappy Zekk-look-a-likes picspam!

Ah, spring! The grass is turning green again! Verdant blades struggle through dark soil, stretching to the stormy March sky, entwined with crushed Pepsi cans and the remnants of a Big Mac meal! An entire winter's worth of crap spreads its message of over-consumption and ruination through the little wooded areas lining the walk to my campus!

WE HAVE A PAUL!

His name is Alex Meraz, and astonishingly enough, he's actually the right ethnicity for the part! Crazy, y/y?

Now I can say "Paul! You ish a warwilf!" when I sit in the front row of the theater at a midnight showing of New Moon!

My World Regional Geography class is a bit odd, demographics-wise; not only am I the lone female in the class, I'm also one of only a few students under the age of twenty-five. So my classmates are basically all overweight guys between the ages of twenty-five and thirty wearing Jeff Gordon hats. Mostly they just like to spout their uninformed redneck views on all things political ("Obama is a terrorist because his name sounds Muslim!"), but today their knowledge of geography and the English language was sorely tested.

Because I totally need a new fandom.

[info]ennta
So I'm finally watching Doctor Who. I'm about halfway through the first season of the new series. The fangirling is just starting to set in. Things always get messy when fangirling kicks in.

But Christopher Eccleston! A tortured balding man with a time machine! How can this fandom possibly go wrong, I ask? ♥

(All of you who know how things end--because I don't and I'd like to keep it spoiler-free--feel free to snicker politely behind your hands at my naivete.)

I should probably be 1) doing homework or, even better, 2) getting some sleep, but I think I'm going to watch one more episode of Doctor Who before I get around to any of that important RL stuff.
